If you’re a politician who truly believes gun violence should be addressed primarily via an increased focus on mental health (and to be fair, I do think it’s a big part of the problem), as a parent I really want to see some concrete proposals- with adequate funding attached. 🙏🏽

“Focus on mental health” sounds reasonable, but if you mean it then walk the talk. Because we’ve seen time and again (and child death after child death) that “focus on mental health” is mostly code for “do nothing till this blows over.” But my kids are scared to go to school.🤦🏽‍♂️

No matter how well we train them, school resource officers are not and will never be Navy SEALs or Army rangers. So I honestly don’t understand how giving them 9mms to go up against assault rifles (and expecting them to morph into John Wick) is supposed to be a solution.🤷🏽‍♂️

Today’s IDK who needs to hear this: This isn’t the Wild West, and school officials aren’t Wyatt Earp. That’s why in most public settings the answer to a bad guy with a gun, isn’t a good guy with a gun. There are so many evidence based paths forward- IF we actually want better.

1) Safe gun storage 2) Social supports (poverty, lack of educational opportunities, and lack of community connections are frequent correlates with firearm injury) 3) Anti bullying initiatives (over 80% of mass shooters report having been bullied) There are more- but these 3 WORK

Dr. Hrabowski provided me first an opportunity to pursue my STEM dreams, then mentorship and support, and now I’m proud to call him a friend. I’ve no doubt there will be future Surgeon’s General, Nobel laureates, and more that come out of this effort from @HHMINEWS!

I’m just a doctor (a trauma anesthesiologist to be exact), but I’m also a parent. And if R politicians don’t start offering parents more than thoughts and prayers and half mast flags, and this keeps happening, that expected wave in the fall may not go as many anticipate…

I’m a gun owner. And as a gun owner I believe in safe gun ownership, and don’t feel like it should be harder for my 18 year old to possess and operate a car than possess a gun. There’s lots of middle ground here- if people only (really) want to find it.
