It's a very dangerous precedent. Up until 1911 MPs weren't paid and were thus expected to fund themselves. As a result only rich men (of course) did it. Sunak probably thinks it's a good look but it sure as hell is not.
MPs didn't receive a working salary until 1918. I know there's a "they get paid too much already" thing that happens and freeloading Johnson hasn't helped but if you want good politicians from a range of backgrounds you need to fund them properly
Like, I'm all for saving the taxpayer a bit of cash, but this seems weirdly Victorian – as though he's a philanthropist rather than a government representative
