#Monkeypox PSA 馃У 1. No evidence cases are #Covid19 related. 2. Most cases are rodent/primate --> human but sporadic human-human is well recognized. 3. Two strains - Central African (more severe); W. African (less severe). Current cases are latter. 1/

4. ~ 85% protection from smallpox vaccine (last dosed 1972 in most parts of world). Good if you got it & > age 50! 5. Most cases are self-limited; fever, flu-like illness 1-3 days, then rash. Secondary skin infections can occur w/ scratching. 2/

6. Disfigurement w/scarring after resolution of rash = most common long-term complication (see "pox" in pic below). 7. Transmission by contact w/ active lesions OR inhalation of respiratory droplets/aerosol (like chickenpox but not nearly as contagious). 3/

8. Risk of transmission from infected person to others ~ 10%. Not astronomical but not zero either. 9. Treatment is supportive (Rx fever, fluids, etc.). Antivirals, immune globulin, etc. not validated for general use but considered in serious cases (rare). 4/

10. No evidence there is sexual transmission but many rashes DO get shared this way! (HSV, HPV, syphilis) & other serious viruses (HBV, HCV, HIV) so always practice safe sex. 5/

11. Don't be surprised if many more clusters of cases emerge over coming weeks. May be as much a function of a big surge in global travel & focus on "active surveillance" (early detection) as anything else. Don't panic. Not #Monkeypox 2.0 yet. 6/

12. Simple rules: - Avoid contact w/ anyone w/ new fever & rash of unknown origin when possible - If you can't, PLEASE wear a good mask (N95/KN95 equivalent) - Get advice from your healthcare provider not a Cyberblog equivalent please. 13. Stay safe. 7/Fin

#Monkeypox has so far been reported from 11 countries that normally don't have the disease. WHO is working with these countries & others to expand surveillance, and provide guidance. There are about 80 confirmed cases, and 50 pending investigations. More likely to be reported.

The UK is using a ring-vaccine strategy to curb the monkeypox outbreak, vaccinating close contacts of cases. This vaccine is used for monkeypox & smallpox. bit.ly/3wq5tXq

Despite all the arrogance of the West, we got Covid wrong. We are still getting Covid wrong. Time to look East, at those thriving while "Living with Covid" Japan: no lockdowns, no excess mortality, better economic performance, and more socialising... 馃У

Remember how unbothered we were when we had no idea that: HPV causes cervical cancer? EBV ("Mono") causes MS? #Covid19 causes myocarditis/strokes/severe pediatric hepatitis/__itis? Just surviving the virus ain't a great plan. #LongCovid #NotJustFlu

It鈥檚 time to invest in next generation COVID vaccines that not only prevent severe disease but also block infection and transmission. It makes sense to induce mucosal immunity to fight a mucosal viral infection. My opinion in @nytimes today馃憞馃徑 nytimes.com/2022/05/16/opini鈥

The Oilers just won the most lopsided 2-0 Game 7 in NHL playoff history. LA's goaltending heroics were no match for Connor MacDavid. Best player on the planet sunk the Kings in #Quicksand #MagnificentMacDavid #GoOilersGo

Not the result I wanted but damn proud of the effort this Leafs squad gave us against the Stanley Cup champs - very formidable opponent. Heads high. Chin up. The cigars will come. Still #BeLeaf #LeafsForever
