Rishi Sunak is so rich that he has been personally paying for flights to the US to conduct government business

Like, I'm all for saving the taxpayer a bit of cash, but this seems weirdly Victorian – as though he's a philanthropist rather than a government representative

Also deeply ironic that he paid for government flights while he and his family used mechanisms to pay tax abroad. Sunak seems pick and choose when he endows the public purse...

It's a very dangerous precedent. Up until 1911 MPs weren't paid and were thus expected to fund themselves. As a result only rich men (of course) did it. Sunak probably thinks it's a good look but it sure as hell is not.

Replying to @WritesBright
I don’t know what the departmental policy is on flight class for ministers, but paying for it yourself hides if you fly first class or even on a private jet.

DfE had the highest WFH rate last month before the Rees Mogg return-to-office edict. So they ordered everyone in and … there’s just not enough space. Some staff had to be sent back home, others working in corridors and canteens. One office has 4x more staff than desks 🙈
Exclusive: @educationgovuk staff have had to work in corridors and canteens after the government’s return-to-the-office edict because the DfE has almost twice as many workers as desks schoolsweek.co.uk/not-enough… #Covid #omicron #workingfromhome

Really well written book, looking at London’s dominance. Draws on HS2, New Labour’s London Challenge programme, devolution and mayors… So much food for thought. Glad to have read it. @WritesBright

Let's be clear: Boris Johnson has let civil servants take the brunt of the punishment for parties that happened under his roof and with his blessing. He's a criminal and a coward.

The normalisation of hybrid working is causing people to settle in the satellite towns that flank big cities (particularly London) – creating a host of new housing crises. 📝 My @BylineTimes report with @LavinSascha
