"In one email obtained discussing a pandemic-related proposal by USDA to require and subsidize hazard pay for workers through corporate tax breaks, a meatpacking lobbyist asked a Tyson lobbyist “Given where margins are, do we want to publicly support a tax break for packers?”

"I need to know, was there ever an agreement to set this up" asks @repdavidscott, reminding that they are testifying under oath All respond "no." Following up: "But none of you have been able to explain the meat margin chart and why profits have been rising since 2015."

The CEOs say the beef industry has been consolidated for 30 years. That's not wrong. But this hearing has not addressed how top meatpackers have been able to take advantage of market power accumulating over time and whether they have been able to weild that power more

“There’s a misconception that when we talk about famine risk and food insecurity the main thing that’s missing is food,” said @Oxfam's @ScottTPaul “In the most dire hunger emergencies around the world, water is as much of a missing ingredient as food is.” forbes.com/sites/chloesorvin…
