staff writer @forbes covering food and ag | @forbesunion steward | my book RAW DEAL is available for pre-order and will publish @atriabooks in December
Still waiting for the top meatpacking CEOs to testify, but here are some highlights so far from this House Ag committee hearing:
a cattle producer was apparently intimidated so much that they backed out of testifying - "They chose not to participate out of fear" @repdavidscott
✌️Personal news: Today is my last day at POLITICO. It's been a great 8 years! I'm proud to have worked alongside so many talented people.
I'm not done covering food policy! I'm launching something new. More details to come. Get on the early list here: bit.ly/3sPyaee
I wrote about a bitcoin mining trend that isn't getting nearly enough attention.
Bitcoin miners/fossil fuel companies—they are increasingly one & the same—are buying portable generators, hauling in server farms in shipping containers & mining bitcoin right at the wellheads
A whistleblower warning to FDA re: Abbott formula plant "should have prompted more aggressive action" -@ScottGottliebMD on @FaceTheNation.
The warning was sent **in October** to 7 officials, incl. acting commish Janet Woodcock.
I broke the story here: politico.com/news/2022/04/28…
Thrilled to have @chloesorvino from @Forbes here at the @Reducetarian Summit to discuss how to invest in the future of food. Can’t wait to read her forthcoming book.
"In one email obtained discussing a pandemic-related proposal by USDA to require and subsidize hazard pay for workers through corporate tax breaks, a meatpacking lobbyist asked a Tyson lobbyist “Given where margins are, do we want to publicly support a tax break for packers?”
plus much more here in today's landmark report from the House Select Subcommittee on Coronavirus Crisis: "Now To Get Rid Of Those Pesky Health Departments!" How The Trump Administration Helped The Meatpacking Industry Block Pandemic Worker Protections" coronavirus.house.gov/sites/…
felt good to pack a basement again to see @SunrotMusic and Trophy Hunt on Friday at @GrimKim’s release show for FIGHT LIKE HELL — which I am so excited to read. The first few pages have me hooked.

A Missouri cow/calf producer describing a rash of suicides among ranchers and farmers:
“There’s blood on their hands”
“Packers take capitalism to a whole new level”
"I need to know, was there ever an agreement to set this up" asks @repdavidscott, reminding that they are testifying under oath
All respond "no."
Following up: "But none of you have been able to explain the meat margin chart and why profits have been rising since 2015."
The CEOs say the beef industry has been consolidated for 30 years. That's not wrong. But this hearing has not addressed how top meatpackers have been able to take advantage of market power accumulating over time and whether they have been able to weild that power more
“There’s a misconception that when we talk about famine risk and food insecurity the main thing that’s missing is food,” said @Oxfam's @ScottTPaul “In the most dire hunger emergencies around the world, water is as much of a missing ingredient as food is.”

In the meetings I’ve attended, much of what we’re seeing in the west is not just drought, but rather aridification, or long-term hydroclimate regime shift. From @chloesorvino forbes.com/sites/chloesorvin…
