Reza Berati was just 23 when he was murdered at the Manus detention centre. Guards who witnessed the violence are now being compensated but 8 yrs on Reza’s family have received no compensation or apology from either the Gov’t or G4S. Utterly shameful. hrlc.org.au/news/2022/5/16/f…

While this is many years overdue, it's still a great moment for this client and his advocate (and there have been many) should be celebrated for never giving up!
When our client and friend was detained in 2013, ABF couldn’t believe he had been jailed and tortured at the age of 5. Only weeks later, they started to send children to Nauru. The rest is history. A thread. #auspol

Incorrect citizenship deprivation decision by Home Secretary, which was later withdrawn, still means man’s daughter, who was born in the meantime, is not British. Very serious consequences for entirely blameless child.
So here’s a judgment about the government’s controversial powers to deprive people of citizenship, and the way they impact on people, including children, in a profoundly draconian way. 1/🧵

Shocking footage of the police repeatedly punching a protester in the head after an immigration raid in #Dalston this evening. How do the @metpoliceuk justify this awful violence?

If this is true it is a significant threat to oversight of the UK’s immigration system. The ⁦@IndependentCI⁩ is vital for public scrutiny of Home Office practices/value. To call it the “Quango reviewing Rwanda asylum plan” misses the point. telegraph.co.uk/politics/202…

Various countries around the world violate refugee rights to discourage asylum-seekers from heading there. My new article examines whether these crackdowns work. "Do Rights Violations Deter Refugees?" in J of Ethnic & Migration Studies @scmrjems tandfonline.com/eprint/2C2F4…

I analyze a global dataset that looks at whether refugees were deported, detained, encamped, and shut out of the formal labor market. I find that deportation, detention, and encampment do not decrease asylum applications or refugee arrivals, and may actually increase them.

The Home Office is preparing a deportation charter flight to Iraq on 31st May & people are being detained. We understand that people - many of whom have been here over a decade - are desperate & fearful of what will happen & treatment they will receive upon return.

It is always wonderful to speak about our @ActionForAfg campaign in Australia and showcase our achievements as a collective diaspora group. It was great to have the EU special envoy to Afghanistan, @tomas_niklasson amongst the audience & wider conversation. @DRC_ngo @BBCSanaSafi

Can any one help here? We have recently applied to bring a vulnerable Afghan family to Oz via Humanitarian Visa. #HomeAffairs very slow. Family are in real danger due to Taliban threats. If the could exit AFG would that jeopardise app for Humanitarian Visa? Do they have to 1/2
