Thank you Bernadette. It shocks me that both sides of our government still ignore any reference to the #RefugeeConvention and that it is not unlawful to seek asylum.
Motivation behind Govt’s dangerous intent on #HumanRightsAct is same as behind its reckless vandalism of #RefugeeConvention. And in pursuing its own authoritarianism, it licenses that of others (including that from which people seeking asylum must flee).

Very brave young people standing up for humane, compassionate policy which respects our legal, international obligations
#RefugeeConvention
As Lord Kerr said in the House of Lords last year “the facts do not support [Priti Patel’s] case for cruelty”

This is far from only way by which #BordersBill22 is profound assault on #RefugeeConvention, #RuleOfLaw & respect for international law more generally.
That Government pursued this & Parliament sanctioned it is itself grave assault on constitutional principle & human rights. 6/6
Critics of #NationalityAndBordersAct rightly draw attention to its manifest repudiation of UK commitment to #RefugeeConvention – by measures to exclude refugees from UK asylum system, from refugee rights or even from recognition of their status altogether. 2/12
The urgent question we face is far more profound than how to now resist or reverse measures in this Bill that contravene international law as set out in the #RefugeeConvention. It is when & how will we reverse & quash a terrible trend of hate that is so long embedded? 3/3
🧡We will continue to call for a humane and compassionate system that upholds access to #justice and the rule of law, protects the right to claim #asylum and respects our obligations under the #RefugeeConvention.
Let's get this right. #Labour (led by a former 'human rights lawyer) whipped its #Lords members to abstain on requiring the government to comply with the #RefugeeConvention?
Why?
For the 4th time the Lords voted to force the UK govt to comply with the Refugee Convention. The vote was lost by 212-157. Labour abstained. I voted against the Party whip.
There can be no exceptions to the rule of law.
Today, the govt abuses refugees, tomorrow it is you/me.
Why did @UKLabour abstain ? Is it because they are chasing the racists' vote in the local elections & don't want to be seen as "soft" & showing compassion ? Do you think countries that do respect the #RefugeeConvention will let the UK know that what they govt is doing is #NotOkay
